Welcome to Critical Thinking: An Introduction to Investigations and Recommendations.

There are currently three major components to the course:

  1. An introductory module in which we describe what critical thinking is and develop a system for representing informal arguments formally.
  2. We then develop a robust and detailed understanding of investigations. Specifically, we split up our study of investigations into three categories: explanations, principles, and patterns. We develop formal structures for each.
  3. Finally, we develop our understanding of recommendations. Again, we find three categories: solutions, guidance, and predictions. We examine the connections between these forms and the three forms of investigations.

Along the way, there are quizzes to test your understanding of the material, as well as assignments designed to get you to apply your understanding creatively.

At the end of this course, you should have a clear understanding of:

  • the differences between opinion and argument
  • the importance of framing investigations and recommendation requests carefully
  • the relationships between investigations and recommendations and how they depend on one another
  • why and how we should exercise our skills at formalising and evaluating arguments.

We look forward to working with you.
