In this course we develop a robust and versatile system for creating arguments to the best explanation. If you're interested in policy-making, legal arguments, troubleshooting and diagnosis, or persuasive pursuits of any kind, this course will help improve your thinking and communication skills.

This course is designed to improve students' non-fiction writing skills in a range of areas, including:

  • personal essays
  • persuasive essays
  • academic essays
  • reviews
  • whitepapers.

By design, the course takes a conversational tone and is a mixture of "lecture", external readings, and a variety of hands-on, marked activities.

Rather than treat particular types of essay writing, we address the building blocks of non-fiction writing in general. The course is split into the following topics:

  • Words
  • Sentences
  • Paragraphs
  • Structure

By the end of the course, students will have mastered word choice, sentence and paragraph construction, and overall structural engineering of an essay.
