Chandler, among the best of the pulp detective fiction writers of the early twentieth century, wrote this essay about the elements of good fiction writing. On the one hand, this is a lesson in fiction writing; on the other hand, this is an excellent essay about writing.

As you read this, consider its structure as an essay. At the same time, consider the merits of the theses he advances. Can you summarise his main point? What support does he offer for this point? What other points does he try to make?
